La fecha conmemora el nacimiento de Karl Landsteiner (Viena, Austria, 14 de junio de 1868 \u2013 Nueva York, 26 de junio de 1943), pat\u00f3logo y bi\u00f3logo austr\u00edaco, que descubri\u00f3 el factor Rhesus, utilizado posteriormente para la tipificaci\u00f3n de los grupos sangu\u00edneos.<br \/>\nEste D\u00eda Mundial pone de relieve la importancia de donar sangre peri\u00f3dicamente para prevenir la escasez en hospitales y cl\u00ednicas, sobre todo en los pa\u00edses en desarrollo, donde las reservas son exiguas.<br \/>\nExiste una necesidad constante de donaciones regulares, ya que la sangre s\u00f3lo se puede conservar durante un tiempo limitado y luego deja de ser utilizable. Las donaciones regulares de personas sanas son imprescindibles para garantizar la disponibilidad de sangre segura en el momento y el lugar en que se precise.<br \/>\nLa sangre es el regalo m\u00e1s valioso que podemos ofrecer a otra persona: el regalo de la vida.
